Avalanche Skills Training
Taking an avalanche skills training course from experienced avalanche professionals is the best way to learn about avalanche safety and safe backcountry travel techniques.
We are currently offering courses in conjunction with Avalanche Safety Solutions in Golden. With qualified instructors that have worked as professionals in the avalanche industry, Avalanche Safety Solutions offers quality avalanche courses that follow the outlines and standards of the Canadian Avalanche Association.
During the course you will explore the terrain inside and outside the boundaries of Kicking Horse to further your understanding of avalanches and travel in avalanche terrain. This course focuses on avalanche self rescue, recognizing avalanche terrain, safe backcountry travel techniques, interpreting the CAA avalanche bulletin, and trip planning. The curriculum has been developed by the Canadian Avalanche Association, and the course is a prerequisite for all those wishing to gain further training in the avalanche industry. The maximum instructor to student ratio is 1 to 6.
All participants are required to have an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel for the duration of the course. You will also need to have either snowshoes or a ski touring set-up. If you do not have the equipment we can help arrange rentals for you with local providers.
Feel free to check existing course dates at www.avalanchesafety.ca, or be in touch with us to set up a custom course. Combining a course with some days of guided touring is a great way to get started in the backcountry.
