Guided Backcountry Day Trips
Just out of ear shot of the lifts and crowded slopes exists a skier’s paradise. Just beyond the patrolled runs lies a place where nature remains undisturbed and intact, only interrupted by high-pitched powder yelps. The blissful rewards are what draw us outside the boundaries of our favorite ski resorts.
Our guided backcountry touring takes intermediate to expert skiers and boarders into the vast powder bowls of the Purcell Mountains. We ride lifts high into the alpine and then exit the boundary into the backcountry. With only a short hike (with or without ski touring equipment), we'll find ourselves at the top of something sweet, ranging from couloirs to gentle gladed tree skiing. Descending from these ridge tops gives us options to connect with the valley bottom and traverse back to the resort, or to continue further on for multiple laps until the end of the day.
All guests going into the backcountry will wear avalanche transceivers and carry a small backpack containing a probe and a shovel. Before we begin the day we'll inspect all the safety equipment, and update or refresh all individuals on the correct use of it. All backcountry equipment, including Snowpulse avalanche airbag backpacks, is available to rent from C Pow's friends at Avalanche Safety Solutions, located in Golden. Rental skis, skins, and splitboards are also available for those new to the activity, or for those wanting to try some new gear. Depending on guests' fitness level and current snow conditions, there are days when hiking to our destination is possible without the use of touring skis, splitboards, or snowshoes. We'll be sure to advise you accordingly.
First time in the backcountry? No worries! Relax and enjoy the introduction seminar covering all the introductory info required, and enjoy the 'gentle terrain option' to ascend and descend. All you need is a reasonable level of fitness, and an expectation of learning an amazing new sport!
Guests' safety is always our primary focus. Canadian Powder guides are extensively trained in first aid and avalanche safety/rescue, and have an intimate knowledge of the backcountry areas we visit. It is important to us that our guests only have to follow our lead, and focus on the powder... the rest is looked after.
