Guided Backcountry Day Trips
We offer a world class backcountry experience in the ski terrain surrounding Kicking Horse Resort. In all directions from the resort boundary lies a variety of options including open bowls, perfectly spaced tree runs, and craggy couloir features. Here in the Dogtooth Range, we're able to access 'runs of a lifetime' via boot packing (walking while carrying skis/board), short ski tours with backcountry touring equipment, as well as long days with multiple descents far from the lifts. One of the great advantages to the terrain here is that from nearly anywhere we can traverse back to the village if we decide to cut the day short. Our private paradise is becoming more frequented by backcountry enthusiasts, but the crowds pale in comparison with other easily accessed touring areas of this quality.
All guests accessing the backcountry wear avalanche transceivers and carry a backpack with avalanche rescue equipment. Before leaving the boundary we'll run through a rescue scenario, which will update and refresh guests on the correct use and proper functioning of all equipment. These tools, including avalanche airbag backpacks, are available to rent from Avalanche Safety Solutions, located in Golden. Rental skis, skins, and splitboards are also available for those new to the activity, or for those wanting to try some of the latest in technology. We'll be sure to advise you on your equipment accordingly.
First time in the backcountry? No worries! The equipment familiarization seminar will be much more in depth, and the terrain options will be selected in accordance to ability and comfort level of those new to the sport. All that's required (besides the correct equipment) is a reasonable level of fitness, and an intermediate or above riding ability. We're always thrilled to see new faces getting into backcountry touring.
Every day we ski with guests, regardless of ability level, experience, and conditions for that day, safety will remain our utmost concern. Your cPow guides are extensively trained in first aid and avalanche safety, and have an intimate knowledge of the backcountry areas we visit. It is important to us that our guests only have to follow our lead, and focus on the powder... we've got the rest covered.
Cost for one day of private guided backcountry skiing or boarding:
